The role of the Governing Body:
The governors are all volunteers. They form a largely strategic role within the school and work within the laws and guidelines set out by the Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). They do this by setting aims and objectives for the school which are reflected in the school’s development plan and action plans from Ofsted and Church School inspections. They adopt policies and set targets for achieving these aims and objectives. More specifically their role includes:
- Setting appropriate targets for pupils achievement
- Managing the school’s budget
- Making decisions on staff pay in line with current Pay and Conditions Documents
- Ensuring the curriculum is balanced and broadly based
- Reporting National Curriculum assessments results to parents, the Local Education Authority and the Department of Education.
- Appointing a Head Teacher and Deputy Headteacher
- Reviewing the Performance Management policy annually for staff appraisal
The overall management of the school is the responsibility of the head teacher. Governors are not expected to be involved in the detail of the day-to-day management of the school – that is the responsibility of the head teacher. Many of the governors’ responsibilities are delegated to the head teacher and the head must report to the governing body regularly on how those delegated powers have been exercised. This is done each term (6 times a year) through the committee structure as well as through the full governing body.
Types of Governors
Foundation Governors: These governors are appointed by the school’s founding body – in this case by the church. They are there to bring a church perspective to the meetings. They do not necessarily have to be from the Church of England but they do need to attend a place of worship regularly. Because we are a voluntary aided Church of England School, Foundation Governors must make up the majority of the governing body.
Parent Governors: Parent Governors are elected by the parents of the school. Their role is to bring a parent perspective to the meetings.
LA Governor: This governor is there to represent the Local Education Authority and is appointed by them.
Teacher Governor: The teacher governor is elected by the teachers in the school and their role to ensure the interests of teachers are represented.
Non-Teaching Governor: The non-teaching governor is elected by all non-teaching staff members. Their role is to ensure the interests of support staff are represented.
Head Teacher: By virtue of their job, the Head Teacher automatically takes a place on the governing body if they so choose (most heads do).
